Freelance Senior Copywriter                                       

Since QBE laid off most of the marketing department in November 2014, I have focused on freelance work. Current clients include a leading national financial institution, a national cell phone accessories manufacturer, a regional credit union and a leading magazine/website publisher. Projects include writing corporate brochures, direct mail, Amazon A+ content, internal announcements and feature print/online articles, and editing blogs.

QBE North America/Bank of America/Countrywide Financial
(Countrywide was purchased by Bank of America, which later sold its B2B division, Balboa Insurance Group, to QBE).

• Concepted and wrote an ad that won a Benny Award for Print, Creative from the Philadelphia Direct Marketing Association.
• Wrote copy for several web sites, including the award-winning Catastrophe Manager site.
• Created and edited collateral to support two major rebrands including corporate brochures, product sheets, web sites and internal announcements.
• Concepted, including photo research, and wrote ads for national publications.
• Concepted and wrote copy for multiple direct mail campaigns featuring innovative form factors.
• Brainstormed content marketing ideas for our external client newsletters, interviewed executives and wrote multiple articles for each issue, varying from monthly to quarterly.
• Wrote internal communications including HR brochures, executive emails, charity support and QBE’s HR/MarCom department newsletter.

New Century Mortgage

• Concepted and wrote copy for materials supporting key product launches, including emails, fliers and collateral, tailored to various audiences: brokers, internal sales representatives andassociates.

• Implemented the department’s first house style guide blending AP Style and mortgage-specific content to create and maintain copy consistency.

• Wrote articles for the internal newsletter, and wrote and edited executive presentations.

• Rebranded the trade show booth, brainstormed and developed creative materials for New Century-sponsored trade show cafés and concierge stations.

• Wrote copy and did photo research for ads that appeared in key industry trade publications.

• Revamped the creative brief, improving efficiency for MarCom and Creative Services.

 

 

Public Relations Supervisor
BowTie Press

(BowTie Press was the book division of BowTie, Inc., the leading publisher of pet magazines, now owned by I-5 Publishing.)

• Wrote ads in BowTie magazines, such as Dog Fancy and Cat Fancy, as well as Publishers Weekly, The New York Times Book Review and The Los Angeles Times Book Review.

• Landed the lieutenant colonel at the Pentagon who oversees the K-9 unit to speak at a launch event in Washington, D.C., for Dog Heroes of September 11th.

• Wrote engaging book cover copy and solicited reviewers for book endorsements.

• Wrote and implemented marketing materials for approximately 20 new books each season, including press releases, marketing plans, tip sheets and sell sheets.

• Determined content for two quarterly newsletters, one for internal employees and one for 1,700 independent bookstores. Wrote articles and assigned stories to BowTie staff.

 

Managing Editor, Veterinary Practice News and Special Projects

(Started as an assistant editor in 1995 and worked on several other magazines. In addition, the newsletter editor and director roles below were concurrent with my managing editor position.)

• Assigned stories to both professional writers and veterinarians, edited articles and supervised associate editor for a monthly trade magazine. Worked closely with editorial team, production and designer. Special projects included a web site, directory and show program.
• Traveled to veterinary conferences to increase industry knowledge, meet advertisers and contributors, and positively represent the company and magazine.

 
Newsletter Editor
Fancy Publications/BowTie, Inc.

• Edited and designed the monthly company newsletter, BowTie Ink, distributed to eight offices
around the country. Earned a Century Club award for Special Achievement for improvements including a redesign and several new columns during my four years as editor.

 

Director, Shattuck Fellowship Program
Fancy Publications/BowTie, Inc.

• Led the editorial internship program for four years. Responsible for budgeting, interviewing, hiring and all aspects of the program. Two years in, I expanded the program to select, hire and coordinate interns for two more departments; marketing and web.
• Facilitated weekly educational seminars with department managers to give the interns an overview of all aspects of magazine publishing. Trained assistant director.
• Introduced off-site visits for the first time and created a detailed syllabus of the program.
